ShinyHuntWhat is soft resetting?
Save, check, restart: the classic way to hunt legendaries and gifts.
Soft resetting (SR) means saving right before a Pokémon is generated, checking it, and restarting the game if it is not shiny. Restarting changes the random results, so each reset is a fresh shiny roll at the game's normal odds.
Good targets
- Legendary and other stationary (static) encounters.
- Gift Pokémon, as long as that gift is not shiny locked.
Always check the Shiny locks article first. Many legendaries and gifts in newer games can never be shiny, so resetting them is wasted time.
How to reset
- Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games: hold A, B, Start and Select.
- DS games: hold L, R, Start and Select.
- 3DS games: hold L, R and Start or Select.
- Switch games have no soft reset. Close the game from the HOME Menu and reopen it instead.
Tips
- You cannot soft reset while the game is saving.
- On most core games you cannot see a starter's colour before you pick it, so you have to receive it and check its summary. HeartGold and SoulSilver are an exception.
- The Shiny Charm helps most static encounters in games where it affects wild Pokémon. Exceptions exist: in Sword and Shield it does not affect the legendary giants or scripted static encounters. It never affects gifts or Mystery Gifts.
